Fiji Layover (Nadi)
May 13, 2009 | Comments 0
Nadi International Airport in Fiji offers a decent amount of things do for those stuck on a layover inside the airport. There is duty free shopping, regular shops that include Fijian souvenirs and local art, a couple places to buy food and some additional services such as airport lounges (downstairs), Internet stands, and travel agencies. You can offer to pay a day rate to visit a lounge where you’ll find Internet access, drinks and even a shoulder massage.
If you can venture out, the main island also presents great options for those on long layovers. The airport is located on the western side of Viti Levu and close to the main tourist regions or the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Major airlines including Air Pacific, Air New Zealand, Virgin Pacific, and Air Korea have regular flights.
A Left Luggage counter (open 24 hours) is located at the end of the departures terminal where you can ditch your bags for FJ$3-$6 a day, depending on the size of your bags. In addition the hotels all have baggage-storage rooms and will keep your extra stuff for free.
If you have the time to leave the airport, you can hire a taxi for a tour, where the driver will show you the sights. If you want to grab a taxi to see the sites yourself, you’ll find the prices reasonable. FJ$2.50 will take you anywhere you want to go around town. For longer trips, you can bargain with the driver. You can also demand for the meter to be turned on before leaving. For more information on taxis and costs, click here. You can also take a bus or rent a car.
Things to do in Fiji:
Rivers Fiji
For a long layover (over 12 hours) you can look into some whitewater rafting tours in Fiji. Click here for information on some organized tours. Budget lots of extra time for transportation, delays and remember to bring a change of clothes.
First Landing
First Landing is a resort built at the location the first settlers arrived on the island. Stop here for a nice breakfast, and to get some rays at the beach. You can even see some distant Fijian islands from the shore.
Garden of the Sleeping Giant
About ten minutes north of Nadi is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, a mountain ridge that resemble a sleeping man and woman. Enjoy a jungle walk that will bring you up close with Fiji’s native plants, lily ponds, and over 2,000 different types of orchids.
Adventures in Paradise Fiji Tour
For those on a long layover, the Adventures in Paradise Fiji Waterfall and Cave tour comes highly recommended. Located one hour from the Nadi Airport, you can visit the home of a village chief and take part in Fijian ceremonies and learn about their local superstitions and witch-craft. You can swim in a lagoon, husk a coconut and trek through a large cave.
Kula Eco Park, Sigatoka
Located in the Southern Coral Coast area of Viti Levu, the Kula Eco Park is less than 1,000 meters from the ocean and allows you to get close to native plants and animals. The park is filled with streams, Fijian flora and fauna, iguanas, parrots, fruit bats and more.
