Layover In Panama City, Panama

Stuck on a layover at The Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, Panama? The airport was renovated in 2006 and is the busiest in Central America as well as the hub of Copa Airlines. You can find a map of the terminals here.
If during your Panama layover, you’re stuck in the airport, you can find the following services including airport assistance, an emergency clinic, Internet and international calls (located in the counter area of the ground floor in the Business Center), duty-free stores, and food and drink locales.
If you have a long layover and are planning to leave the airport, your best way is to take the Tourist Taxi service, which are the only taxis that can be boarded at the airport. Tel. You can also take the Airport Shuttle which offers a 3-hour layover tour from the airport for $95 for one person and $45 per person for two people.
If you’re trying to decide whether or not to leave the airport, here’s some general tips. The airport is located 15 miles from Panama City, Panama which makes it accessible to those on a long layover. If you’re hoping to catch a few sites, here’s our recommendations:
Panama Canal
Considered the “Eighth Wonder Of The World” the Panama Canal is truly a fascinating place to visit. The canal is over 80 km long, connects the Atlantic and the Pacific, and is operated by over 9,000 people. The canal has a gift shop and restaurant as well. The Tocumen airport is roughly 30 minutes (without traffic) to the canal.
Amador Causeway
The Amador Causeway is a great place to take in the city skyline, take a walk, people watch, and grab a bite to eat. The 3.5 miles breakwater connects three islands – Naos, Perico and Flamenco.
Parque Natural Metropolitano
The park is a great place to get away. 10-minutes away from downtown, this rainforest park has an orchid greenhouse, museum, and many hiking and strolling paths, some which offer a great view of the city. You may also be able to spot some monkeys, deer, toucans and sloths.
Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Panama
As Panama’s only private museum, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Panama displays paintings, photography, and sculptures. Take a look at their website to catch any traveling exhibits, concerts or workshops.
