Layover At Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport

Stuck on a layover at Moscow-Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO)? As Moscow’s second largest airport and the hub for the Russian airline Aeroflat, this is a main center and close the city center of Moscow, so you’ll find there is lots to do both inside and outside the airport, depending on the length of your layover.
The airport offers a lot of services including restaurants, shops, WiFi provided by three companies, baby changing rooms, luggage packing, and a post office. There’s also a VIP lounge. For a map of the airport, click here.

The airport is located 18 miles northwest of Moscow, although travel time to the city center can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, as the main road – the Leninggradskoe Highway – can get very congested. If you’re trying to figure out if you can leave the airport, click here for useful tips.
If you’d like to leave your bags while you explore, the airport offers a Luggage Room in Terminal 1 in the Arrival pavilion. To store one piece of luggage a day costs 140 rubles.

Taxis to Moscow are available 24 hours a day. Taxis can be ordered from a taxi desk in every airport terminal. Taking a taxi from downtown Moscow to Sheremetyevo costs around $30–40. Aeroexpress trains connect Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Station. On their way to Sheremetyevo trains make a stop at the Savelovsky Railway Station, but not the other way. The Kremlin
The most recognizable building in Moscow, the Kremlin is a historic complex that houses four cathedrals and the Kremlin towers. The center of the Kremlin is Cathedral Square where you can see six buildings – the three cathedrals, two churches and Ivan the Great Bell Tower.
Red Square
The Red Square has been the main square in Moscow since the 15th century. The area is packed with historical sites and points of interest including the Resurrection Gate, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lobnoye Mesto and the GUM department store.
Bolshoi Theater
The Bolshoi is Moscow’s most impressive theater and if you can, you won’t want to miss catching an opera or ballet here. Tickets can be purchased online, at the box office, by phone,
through a travel agent or hotel, or at the on-location ticket kiosk. Scalped tickets can also be bought outside the theatre for that day’s shows.
Dorogomilovsky Market
The Dorogomilovsky Market has lots of great fresh food including local fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses and spices. There are tons of free samples of local cuisine offered, and they are well known for their exotic caviar.
