Lucky for you, now is the perfect time to be in Luxembourg limbo, especially considering a brand new terminal was opened at the end of April 2008. The refurbished airport is located only 3.5 miles from the City Centre, making it an accessible destination if you have a day or so to spare in the country. If you’re trying to determine whether you can leave the airport during your Luxembourg layover, click here for some useful tips.

Only got a few hours before your connecting flight? Good news! Even if you don’t have time for a city expedition, newly renovated Terminal A of Findel offers a wide range of services to keep you more than entertained – from a business lounge to WiFi, designer shopping, restaurants and bars. Check out this virtual tour for further information.

For the business tourist, Findel offers a Business Class lounge in which travelers can relax, wine and dine before their departure. Two meeting rooms are also available for groups of up to either 12 or 20 participants. Click here for information on how to hire out these areas.

Social travelers who prefer some retail therapy will love the new buy bye Luxembourg salesroom – a concept that combines three stores in one. Here, before reaching their security gate, tourists can comb the shelves of an accessories store, a gift boutique and a ready-to-wear clothing store complete with brands including Hugo Boss, Max Mara and Lacoste. All this spent shopping energy can hence be regained with a buffet meal at the mezzanine Panoramic restaurant, offering a unique view of aircraft runway comings and goings.

Those wanting to surf the web are also catered for at Findel. Travelers can connect to the Internet throughout the terminal by going to Hotcity (WiFi) on their laptop. This program is a unique initiative of Luxembourg, enabling short-term holidaymakers to check out the sites they wish to visit and perhaps even seek out some last minute accommodation.

On that note, if you are tired and looking for a place to stay the night during your Luxembourg layover, there are a range of Luxembourg hostels which may fit your requirements. For something close by, check out the Ibis Luxembourg Airport situated right next to Findel and providing an ideal budget base for a journey to Luxembourg City.

Speaking of which, if you are keen on heading in to the centre, just jump on a Number 16 bus from the airport and you’ll be taken straight to the City Centre and Railway Station.

Layover Guide’s Suggestions of Things to Do on a Luxembourg Layover:

River Moselle
One of the nicest ways to wile away your layover hours is to take a cruise down the River Moselle. Situated in Luxembourg’s wine region, the River is surrounded by gentle slopes that are virtually covered by vineyards. While you’re there, why not step into one of the region’s wineries – they will be more than happy to take you on a guided tour!

The Casemates
Navigate your way through this 17km labyrinth of underground passageways that once helped forge Luxembourg’s military reputation. The first of these tunnels was built under Spanish rule in 1644, being later extended in the 18th century. The Casemates are today recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are open for the public to explore.

Place d’Armes
Located in the very heart of the old fortified city, Place d’Armes is the perfect site for people watching from a lively café. Originally constructed in the 17th century when it was used by French troops as a parade ground, the entire area still epitomises Old Town Luxembourg. Make sure to check out the antique flea markets organised here every second and fourth Saturday of the month.

The US Military Cemetery
Not far from Findel airport lies the US Military Cemetery – a final resting ground of 5076 American troops who fought in Luxembourg during World War II. The cemetery was established on 29 December 1944 by the US Third Army, and today houses the grave of its General George Patton. It is open daily to the public from 9am to 5pm.

Vianden Castle
Overlooking the River Our, you will find the beautiful 11th century gem that is Vianden Castle. Visitors can wander through the skilfully restored halls, kitchen and bedrooms on a castle tour complete with mannequins dressed in Medieval costume! Afterwards, take a chairlift down to the charming town of Viaden to explore its quaint lanes, gothic churches and newly renovated Victor Hugo House – a tribute to the French writer who stayed here during his years of exile.
