8 budapest 2005.1134906300.gellert baths Budapest LayoverIf you’re stuck on a layover at Budapest’s Ferihegy International Airport (BUD) you’ll find that there’s plenty to do in Hungary’s largest airport.

If you’re looking to grab a bite or do some shopping, there’s a list of places in Terminal 1, Terminal 2A, and Terminal 2B. In addition you can find many services in the airport including GSM phone coverage, wireless Internet (Wi-Fi is provided by Pannon), post office, ATM, baggage wrapping, Left luggage (in Terminal 2B), and lounges. For a map of the terminals, click here. If you’re looking for a hotel room to get some rest during your layover, or use as a base for some sightseeing, here are some options.

The airport is located 10 miles southeast of Budpest city center, which makes the city accessible for those on a long layover. (If you’re trying to figure out if you can leave the airport during your layover, click here for useful tips).

If you’re arriving at night or looking for a place to rest, check out cheap Budapest hotels. There are three and four star hotels that are within two miles of Ferihegy International Airport. Some cheap hotels you might consider are: The Sarokhaz Pianzia, then there is the four star Airport Hotel Budapest or  Airport Hotel Stacio -  5 minutes from Ferihegy International Airport and 15 kilometers from the city center of Budapest.

Taxis are available from the taxi stand, however only one taxi company, Zóna Taxi, is authorized operate from the airport, and it is a zone-based fixed-rate system. You can view the rates here. There’s also car rentals, an airport bus that departs every 10 minutes to city center and the metro, Budapest Airport Minibusz that run airport shuttles to any city destination, and the Hugarian State Railway (the trip from Terminal 1 to Nyugati Railway Station in central Budapest takes roughly 25 minutes). If you’re looking for a good panoramic view of Budapest, look no further. With a great view of the Danube River, Gellert Hill is over 430 feet above sea level and is home to the fortress, the Citadella, at the top.

Budapest Castle District
The Castle District is a picturesque area of cobblestone streets and is considered to be the heart of medieval Budapest. There are great shops, restaurants and attractions in this area including Royal Palace, Fisherman’s Bastion, and Matthias Church.
