Layovers are a great way to extend your trip, and get the chance to see some sites in a city while you have the time. Now, many countries including Thailand, are beginning to see the tourist opportunities from layovers and stopovers.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand will be starting a 7 month layover campaign in March 2011 to attract more tourists to Bangkok.
The “Amazing Thailand Stopover” campaign will be launched at the ITB Berlin, and will align with various airline, hotel and restaurant partners throughout Thailand. The campaign will provide stopover packages for a few days, and offer assistance to help passengers change flights and book activities.
Many countries, including Iceland, have been able to take advantage of tourists on layovers and stopovers, and as Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport has over 1.5 million passengers annually, there’s an opportunity for layovers to be lucrative for Bangkok.
