Great post, thank you. But I have a question: I'm flying from LAX to Auckland with a 12 hour layover in Sydney. I would love to leave the airport and visit Sydney Harbour, but will Australian customs allow me to legally leave the airport?

    Thank you for your help.

Most of the time you can leave, but it depends on your ticket. The best way would be to call your airline and inquire with them. Here's some more tips on leaving the airport during layovers — http://www.layoverguide.com/2009/03/can-i-leave-airport-during-layover.html

    Hi there,

very informative post. Do you know if I’ll have to pay a departure tax if I leave the airport during my layover in Sydney? It’s usually included within the airline ticket, however this flight is between Wellington and London (Qantas), therefore don’t think would be covered.
