Stuck on an Oakland Layover? The Oakland International Airport in the San Francisco area of California is a busy airport, with flights to destinations in the United States, Mexico and Europe. The airport is located roughly five miles from downtown Oakland, which makes the city accessible for those on long layovers. Oakland layoverIf you’re stuck inside the Oakland airport during your layover, there’s plenty to do during your wait. The airport has two terminals, and in each terminal you can find food, beverages, and retail shops – all listed by location and type here. The Oakland Airport also offers airport public art to view, a golf course located right at the airport, and an aviation museum open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Oakland Zoo

The Oakland Zoo is located on 565 acres in Knowland Park in Oakland, and is exhibits over 660 native and exotic animals.  The zoo is open daily Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The Zoo is located at 9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland off Highway 580.

Oakland Museum of California

The Oakland Museum of California showcases art, history and natural science as it relates to California and its people. The history collection displays over 1.7 million items reflecting California’s history and culture, the nature collection shows California’s biological diversity, and the art collection has the most comprehensive of California art from the mid 1800’s to present day.


A great layover stop for kids, Fairyland was created in 1950 and provides a visual look back at children’s fairytales. The ten-acre park displays roughly 30 sets including Captain Hook, Alice in Wonderland, the Three Little Pigs, and more.

Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt is a great place to take a nice walk in between flights, or those traveling with dogs. The Lake is located on Bellevue Avenue, between Ellita Avenue and Perkins Street. The entrance to Fairyland is located here.
